Associate in Arts (A10100)

College Transfer Associate Degree

The Associate in Arts degree shall be granted for a planned program of study consisting of a minimum of 60 semester hours of credit (SHC) of college transfer courses. Within the degree program, the student will have opportunities for the achievement of competence in reading, writing, oral communication, fundamental mathematical skills, and basic computer use. The program is divided into a 31-32 SHC Universal General Education Transfer Component (UGETC) and a 28-29 SHC Degree Completion Component. Courses selected should be chosen carefully to match the requirements of the university or college where the student plans to transfer. Other than course sequences governed by pre-requisites, the two components may be completed in any order.

Courses are approved for transfer through the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA). The CAA enables North Carolina community college graduates of two-year associate in arts programs who are admitted to constituent institutions of The University of North Carolina to transfer with junior status.

Community college graduates must obtain a grade of “C” or better in each course and an overall GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale in order to transfer with junior status. Courses may also transfer through bilateral agreements between institutions. Course substitutions may invalidate the protections afforded under the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement.

Students may be required to take developmental courses in Math and/or English as a result of high school GPA or pre-enrollment placement tests.  Therefore, the student may need more than the minimum number of semester hours listed for graduation. Consult a program advisor for more information.

Accelerated Associate in Arts Option

The accelerated degree program at Blue Ridge Community College allows you to earn an Associate in Arts degree in one year. Courses will be completed during five 8-Week Mini-Semesters utilizing online courses.

Persistence Guidelines for Accelerated Option

  • Attend Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters

  • Secure financial resources to complete program (i.e. FAFSA, self-pay, or scholarships)

  • Meet with advisor every semester prior to and during registration

  • Attend all classes in which you are enrolled

  • Not withdraw from any course without permission from advisor

  • Start with a high school GPA of 2.8 or above and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.0

  • Seek academic resources, such as tutoring, as prescribed by either instructor or advisor

  • Provide current contact information and update staff with any changes

  • Reply to email and phone messages in a timely manner when contacted by faculty and staff

  • Abide by all institutional policies regarding code of conduct
